Technology capabilities¶
Technology capabilities describe what technology must do to enable Defra's business capabilities. Defra's model is aligned to Technology Business Management (TBM): 6 level 1 areas, each with its level 2 capabilities.
Draft - to be confirmed
Parts of this page, such as names, timings and thresholds, are still being confirmed by the architecture team. Use it as a guide, and check with your solution design authority before relying on the detail.
Use technology capabilities to:
- find the capabilities a service needs before choosing products, platforms or suppliers
- check whether Defra already provides a capability before building or buying something new
- find strengths, gaps and investment priorities for strategies and roadmaps
- discuss technology choices in the same language across teams and organisations
Technology capabilities describe what technology must do. Guardrails describe how we expect it to be done.

The full catalogue¶
This site shows the top 2 levels. The full technology capability catalogue, with definitions, ownership, lifecycle status and the relationships between capabilities, is maintained by Strategic Architecture:
- Technology capability catalogue (Defra staff only)
- Strategic Architecture methods and guidance (Defra staff only) - standards, decision trees and governance
Aligned with industry models
The level 1 and level 2 structure follows Technology Business Management (TBM), with Defra additions for geospatial and scientific data. Using a common capability language helps teams compare, share and reuse technology across organisational boundaries.
