Capability mapping

How Defra's business capabilities depend on technology capabilities. Use it to find what your service will probably need, and to see where shared investment pays off most.

Each dot means the business capability typically depends on that technology capability. Columns are level 2 technology capabilities, grouped by level 1 area. Select any row or column to see the detail.

To be confirmed

TODO: Strategic Architecture to review this mapping. It was converted from the earlier technology capability model to the TBM level 2 capabilities and is a first draft. Some columns combine several earlier capabilities, so they may show more dots than they should.

Reading the map

  • Columns with many dots suggest where shared technology matters most. Investing in a capability once pays off across every business capability that uses it, and duplicating it costs the most.
  • Rows give a delivery team a starting checklist of the technology capabilities a service in that area is likely to need.
  • Delivery and infrastructure capabilities, such as Enabling Platforms, Operations, Compute and Network, underpin almost every service. The map only marks them where a business capability depends on them directly.

Using this for planning

The architecture team uses this map with portfolio data to:

  1. assess the maturity of each technology capability against the business capabilities it serves
  2. identify duplicated products supporting the same capability
  3. shape the technology roadmap presented to the Technology Governance Board
